Step-by-Step Guide on Transferring a Domain Name to a New Host
Have you recently switched to a new web hosting provider? You can
retain your old domain name even if you are using a new host. Moving
your domain name to a new web host may seem to be quite complicated
and perplexing. But in fact, doing so is easier than it seems. The
following are five simple steps to transfer your domain name to a
new web host:
1. Find a new domain registrar for your domain name. The domain
registrar will serve as the new home of your domain name. Ask your
new web host if it offers domain registrar services. If it does,
then you are lucky because it will enable you to manage your domain
name and to host your website at the same time. What’s more, you
will incur less expenses when you use the domain registrar services
of your new web host than using a separate domain registrar. If your
new web hosting provider does not have one, then you may need to
look for a domain registrar somewhere else.
2. Get your authorization code from your old domain registrar. This
code is essential because your new domain registrar will need it for
transferring your domain name. To find the authorization code, go to
the website of your old registrar and look up “transfer domain name”
in the search field of the site. If you cannot find the code in the
website, you may need to call the registrar to ask for the code.
3. Check if your domain name allows you to start a transfer. Contact
your old registrar to get information about this.
4. At this point, domain name transfer can begin. Look for the
transfer or domain management tool in the website of your new domain
registrar. Once you have found it, type in your domain name and the
authorization code before you send a request for transfer of domain
name. After submitting the request, you have to find the email that
comes with your domain name. You must access this email so that you
can accept the domain name transfer. The registrar will send to that
email a new authorization code or a link that you will click on to
start the transfer. If you cannot access the email, call your old
registrar and ask help in retrieving it.
5. The domain name transfer may take a few hours to several days.
Once the transfer has been completed, check if everything works
fine. Now, your domain name is good to go!
